Mando(we make this)
$4.99 one-timeBest for: Most people: tap to click you set up once and never think about again
Gestures: Tap to click, right click, drag, double and triple tap, each with its own switch
Good
- Re-arms itself after sleep and Bluetooth reconnects, which is the most common way tap to click silently stops
- A menu showing every gesture with its own switch, and a live readout of which one fired
- Signed automatic updates, plus battery levels for all your Apple peripherals, two audio outputs at once, and a shortcut browser
Watch out for
- Five times the price of MagicMouseTap if you only want tap to click
- A newer app, at version 0.2
- Fewer gesture types than TappitX or TapToClick Pro
BetterTouchTool
$15 (2 years of updates) or $25 lifetime, one-time; also on SetappBest for: Power users who will customise more than the mouse
Gestures: Any tap can be mapped to left, right or middle click, plus thousands of other actions
Good
- Covers every input device: trackpad, keyboard, Magic Mouse, Stream Deck
- Actively developed for over a decade, with frequent releases
- One licence covers all your personal Macs
Watch out for
- Tap to click is not on by default. You build it yourself from "1 Finger Tap" triggers, and tap-to-drag takes extra setup
- Users on its own forum report a noticeable delay, because the tap fires when the finger lifts
- A lot of app if tap to click is all you wanted
TappitX
$2.99 one-time, including future updatesBest for: The most tap gestures for the least money
Gestures: Tap and double-tap to click, right click by zone or pressure, tap-to-drag, middle click by a center strip or multi-finger tap
Good
- More gesture options than MagicMouseTap at a similar price
- Pressure-based right click is unusual and well liked
- Apple Silicon and Intel, macOS 12 or later
Watch out for
- Newer and smaller. The site names no developer and gives no version history
- Magic Mouse only (1 and 2), so it does nothing for a trackpad or keyboard
TapToClick
One-time, two tiers (Essentials, Pro). The site does not list prices outright, so check before buyingBest for: Mapping mouse gestures to shortcuts
Gestures: Tap to click, right-click zone, three-finger middle click, double-tap-hold to drag. Pro adds holds, swipes and pinches mapped to 30+ actions
Good
- Notarized by Apple, and supports macOS 12 through the current release
- Pro turns the mouse surface into a small shortcut pad
- No account needed for the trial
Watch out for
- Licences are per device: 2 for Essentials, 4 for Pro
- Pricing is harder to find than it should be
MagicMouseTap(we make this)
$0.99 one-timeBest for: The cheapest way to get tap to click working
Gestures: Tap to click, right click, drag, double and triple tap
Good
- Under a dollar, with no subscription
- Nothing to configure: start it and taps click
- Tiny menu-bar app, macOS 14 or later
Watch out for
- Can stop responding after your Mac sleeps until you toggle it off and on (Mando fixes this)
- No per-gesture controls, so a gesture is all or nothing
- No automatic updates
Free and open-source options
FreeBest for: Developers comfortable building from source
Gestures: MagicTap and MouseToucher: left-side tap to click, right-side tap to right click, with drag. MagicMouseAgent: tap to left and right click
Good
- Free, with readable source (MIT or GPL)
- Small enough to audit yourself
Watch out for
- Hobby projects with a handful of contributors and no support
- Usually unsigned or build-it-yourself, so expect macOS security prompts
- Can break on a macOS update with nobody obliged to fix it
Often recommended, but they don't do tap to click
These come up in nearly every thread about Magic Mouse tap to click. Some are excellent apps, just not for this.
- Magic Utilities
- Windows only. It is the go-to way to use a Magic Mouse on a Windows PC, but it has no Mac version, so it cannot add tap to click on macOS.
- SteerMouse
- A good driver for third-party mice, but its developer states it does not support the Apple Magic Mouse.
- Mac Mouse Fix
- Built for third-party mice with extra buttons. Its README says it currently has no effect on the Magic Mouse.
- MiddleClick / WheelClick
- Adds middle click (three-finger click or tap, and in WheelClick other multi-finger clicks) but not a one-finger tap to left click.
- Swish
- Mostly trackpad gestures for window management. On a Magic Mouse it works through swipes, not tap to click.
- Jitouch
- Gesture shortcuts for windows and tabs. The original is unmaintained, and neither it nor its community fork documents a plain tap to click.
- MagicPrefs
- The app many people remember for this. It is 32-bit and has not run since macOS Catalina (2019).
How we checked
Prices, trials and gesture support come from each developer's own site in October 2026: folivora.ai, gettappit.com, taptoclick.app, plentycom.jp, macmousefix.com, magicutilities.net, highlyopinionated.co and the GitHub pages of the open-source projects. macOS's own options come from Apple's “Mouse settings on Mac” support page. Complaints come from each app's public forum and the MacRumors forums.
